To become an egg donor, women must meet certain requirements. The standards for donating eggs are set by the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). Clinics and agencies that deal with egg donation services must follow their standards to become licensed and most reputable physicians and fertility clinics follow their guidelines. The FDA may also have certain guidelines.
Donors must be between 21 and 34 years old and be in good health to be an egg donor. The donor should have a clean medical history and family medical history. This means that no genetic disorders or diseases may be present. Donors are also required to lead a healthy lifestyle meaning they should not drink heavily, smoke, take drugs or take part in any unhealthy activities or lifestyles.
Egg donors are required to go through a series of tests to detect any nicotine, drug or alcohol use, infectious diseases, genetic mutations or other conditions. The donor may also be screened to ensure that she is able to produce an appropriate amount of eggs in each cycle. The fertility clinic or egg donation agency may have their own standards in addition to those set forth by the FDA and ASRM. A donor may be limited by the ASRM to donating no more than six times in her lifetime.
A donor will be paid for her time, travel and effort. Typically, this means being paid between $5,000 and $10,000, but each clinic or agency may vary. Women who are interested in becoming egg donors should speak with a medical professional or representative at a reputable fertility clinic or egg donation agency for more information. Donors should discuss the procedure and any fertility drugs they may be required to take with a medical professional at one of these facilities so that they fully understand all that is involved.
